Bacteria, viruses and parasites within our waters can threaten the health and wellbeing of important species, ecosystems and industries. VIMS & Batten School researchers investigate the associated environmental, human- and host-driven factors and inform the management of diseases impacting coastal ecosystems and oceans. Our scientists develop solutions to track, treat and manage the transmission and evolution of diseases impacting our waters and the organisms within, including commercially important species like striped bass and blue crabs. This work also extends to aquaculture, where researchers study diseases affecting farmed fish and shellfish and explore strategies — including vaccines — to improve animal health and support sustainable seafood production. From oyster pathogens to the genetic mechanisms of disease resistance, our research examines how marine organisms respond to environmental stressors and identifies opportunities for resilience in and beyond the Bay.
A Path Forward for Shellfish
The VIMS Shellfish Pathology Laboratory studies the diseases of commercially important mollusks like oysters and clams while developing and evaluating diagnostic assays and training students and researchers around the world on our cutting-edge methodologies. Diseases such as Dermo and MSX in oysters and QPX in clams continue to impact fisheries and aquaculture industries for these species. Our Shellfish Pathology Lab tests shellfish transported across state lines to help prevent the introduction and spread of pathogens and protect Virginia’s shellfish industry and provides guidance concerning these diseases to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.
Advancing Aquatic Disease Science for a Healthier Environment
AquaDI provides robust science for the commonwealth and Chesapeake Bay region, guiding the management of diseases in economically important and ecologically sensitive speicies. Examples include mycobacteriosis in striped bass, dermo and MSX in oysters and morbillivirus in dolphins. AquaDI responds to current and emerging disease threats, leveraging their expertise in pathology, virology, bacteriology, parasitology, genetics and molecular biology on behalf of industry and ecosystem.
