VIMS & Batten School researchers have taken the lead on understanding how global stressors are shaping the future of our coastlines and oceans. Our approach to this work is designed to consider not only our most pressing challenges but also the biggest opportunities ahead to create a more resilient commonwealth and share our findings with the world. From shifting shorelines and intensifying storms to the future of seafood and coastal communities, VIMS & Batten School scientists and staff are working to ensure that our science works for you. The most advanced technologies are being leveraged to develop solutions that we can translate into everyday tools that make an impact in people's lives today, tomorrow and beyond.
Studying the Loss & Survival of Coastal Landscapes
The Coastal Ecogeomorphology Lab explores how land and sea interact over time to create our dynamic and valuable coastal landscapes. In researching how wetlands, marshes and other coastal ecosystems respond to factors such as sea-level rise and human impact, our scientists are developing insights that communities can put toward a more resilient future. This work reveals the potential of coastal habitats to protect shorelines, store carbon and support thriving ecosystems, providing the science for solutions that our commonwealth and nation's coastlines can rely on.

Updated annually and available through an interactive dashboard, the cards display data from tide gauges at 36 coastal locations across the U.S., with projections through 2050.
