Understanding Our Coastal Systems
VIMS & Batten School researchers study the organisms, habitats and processes shaping coastal and marine ecosystems. From microscopic plankton drifting through our oceans to the expansive seagrass beds within our bays, our scientists explore the biological, chemical and physical processes that define these dynamic ecosystems. Field research spanning the Chesapeake Bay to the Southern Ocean, innovative laboratory experiments and close collaboration with communities all support the transformation of our science into solutions that benefit both people and planet.
The World's Most Successful Seagrass Restoration Project
VIMS & Batten School scientists pioneered methods used in a collaborative effort to restore eelgrass along Virginia's Eastern Shore in what's become known as the world's most successful seagrass restoration project. Our innovative research advances monitoring and restoration work as we continue to study seagrasses throughout the Bay in collaboration with local, state and federal partners.
