Fisheries Research, at Scale
VIMS & Batten School researchers investigate both commercial and recreational species abundance and range, migration patterns, population trends, and food web dynamics. From blue crabs to tiger sharks, our monitoring and tagging programs include some of the only fishery-independent programs in Virginia, as well as some of the longest-running multispecies surveys in the nation. The world-class research that faculty, students and scientists conduct takes them from the rivers and streams of Appalachia to the far reaches of our blue planet.
Science for Sustainable Seas
VIMS & Batten School's Multispecies Research Group (MRG) provides the long-term data and ecosystem insights that support sustainable fisheries management across the Chesapeake Bay and Mid-Atlantic. Started in 1974, the MRG shark population study is one of the world's longest-running shark surveys and helped establish the first U.S. management plan for sharks. Their nationally recognized monitoring programs deliver critical stock assessments for species like striped bass while multspecies studies contribute to our understanding of the Bay's complex food web.
Preserving Industry & Culture
Our Marine Advisory Program (MAP) works closely with the commercial fishing industry and with recreational fishers, serving as a trusted tether between scientists, resource managers and Virginia’s fishing communities. By connecting the fishing community with our science through technical assistance and collaborative opportunities, MAP helps to ensure the long-term vitality of Virginia’s coastal communities. From the longstanding Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program to our modern efforts developing market solutions for the invasive blue catfish, VIMS & the Batten School remain focused on science that works for our commonwealth's fisheries.
Appalachian freshwater fish survey pushes students out of their comfort zone
For 56 years, the VIMS & Batten School Roanoke Roundup has immersed scientists and students in the tributaries of Southwest Virginia. Scenic collection sites, colorful freshwater fishes and long days in the field and lab combine deep in the Appalachian Mountains to create one of our most unique educational opportunities.
