About VA SEA
Educators from the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERRVA) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science's (VIMS) Marine Advisory Program created the Virginia Scientists and Educators Alliance (VA SEA) in 2015. VA SEA is a network of graduate students, teachers, and informal educators aimed at translating scientific research into usable lesson plans.
From 2015-2017, 15 graduate students from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), University of Virginia (UVA), and Old Dominion University (ODU) developed middle and high school lesson plans based on their current research. A second round of funding was secured in 2018, with an additional 7 graduate students participating. All lesson plans were vetted by classroom teachers, and science-fair-style open houses were held to introduce the newly created materials to educators. To see all available lesson plans, go to:
