Virginia's Young Fishermen’s Initiative Workshop

Purpose:

The vision for “Young Fishermen’s Workshop” is to provide an opportunity for younger generation fishermen (and women) to continue (or begin) their involvement in commercial fishing and preserve the fishing heritage through workshops, training, and networking opportunities.

Upcoming Events:

The last event was hosted on January 10, 2026 in partnership with the Virginia Marine Resources Commissioner's Commercial Waterman’s Apprentice Program.

The next workshop is contingent upon funding - details will be added as available.

What do participants get out of attending?

  • Training sessions in marketing, business management, public communication, the fisheries regulatory process, and the science of fisheries management
  • Meet, socialize, and talk about issues with other young fishermen from around Virginia, as well as fishing industry leaders, fishery managers, and scientists
