Recognition Policies
As part of our commitment to employee recognition and appreciation, VIMS & the Batten School designate discretionary funds to support employee recognition upon retirement and to send our condolences or best wishes when employees experience certain life events.
Recognition of Life Events
Flowers can be sent from VIMS & the Batten School if an employee or student experiences the following life events:
- Overnight hospitalization or in-patient surgery
- Adoption or Childbirth
- Death of a member of their immediate family (i.e., mother, father, spouse, children, or any other relative living in the staff's household)
Upon death of an employee or student of VIMS & the Batten School, flowers may be sent to their immediate family.
VIMS & the Batten School adhere to the W&M Flower Procurement Policy, and extend this policy to part-time staff.
When the flower order is placed, an accompanying card will indicate that the item comes from “Your friends at VIMS & the Batten School.”
To request flowers for an employee or student life event, please complete the Flower Request Form. Once the request is received, you will receive a confirmation email and the Procurement Office will initiate the purchasing process for the flowers.
Retirement Recognition
VIMS & the Batten School adhere to the W&M Retirement Gift Policy, which provides guidelines for gift purchases based on the employee’s years of service. At VIMS & the Batten School, we extend this policy to part-time employees. In addition to funds for the purchase of a gift, we also provide central support, of approximately $500, for a retirement reception. These funds can be used for food and non-alcoholic beverages.
To request funds for retirement gift of reception, please complete the Retirement Reception & Gift Request Form. Once the request is received, you will receive a confirmation email that connects you to the procurement office to complete the gift/reception purchases.
