Modeling

Modeling is the applied science of creating (computerized) representations of portions of the Earth's surface/sub-surface based on physical principles and geological, chemical and biological processes.  CCRM uses several types of diverse modeling approaches such as:

  • SCHISM is an integrated modeling system based on hydrodynamics that can incorporate waves, sediments, tidal marshes, and other physical and biological processes.
  • Flood Modeling uses complex physics-based models for storm surges, rainfall and derivative river discharges.
  • Geospatial Modeling analyzes spatial relationships and patterns of geographic features using geographic information systems (GIS), focusing on shoreline environments and nearshore sediments, and the use of lidar (elevation data) to study geomorphic features.
  • Earth System Modeling of interacting systems such as the atmosphere, ocean, ice and land.
