Sustainability

In both our research and everyday actions, Batten School & VIMS employees strive to keep sustainability at the forefront of everything we do. Research covers a variety of topics related to sustaining healthy coastal and marine ecosystems – mitigating pollution, maintaining healthy fisheries, addressing climate science and more.

In the strategic plan, we also establish the goal that “VIMS will lead by example in sustainable design, construction, and campus-wide action”. To address this campus-wide objective, the Committee on Sustainability addresses current and future opportunities in sustainability-minded campus-wide infrastructure and action. The Green Team at VIMS also engages with our campus to provide support for new initiatives and community events, such as beach cleanups and upcycling socials. To celebrate our successes, a Sustainability Award is given at the annual VIMS awards ceremony to the individual or group who has demonstrated leadership in environmentally minded action throughout the year.
