Facilities/Safety/Trades

The Outstanding Employee awards are chosen by nominations received by the Awards Committee from all faculty, staff, and students at VIMS. They are awarded in the categories of Facilities/Safety/Trades, Research and Advisory Service, Technical Support, and Administrative Support.

This year, we are pleased to present the Outstanding Employee in Facilities/Safety/Trades to Rebecca Sturgeon and Heather Gray.

Rebecca Sturgeon (left) VIMS Dean and Director John Wells (center) and Heather Gray (right).Rebecca and Heather—VIMS’ own mother/daughter housekeeping team—are well known for their professionalism, work ethic, and excellent customer service. Both ladies have close to 7 years of service to VIMS.

Rebecca and Heather are conscientious, dependable employees who quietly go about cleaning their assigned buildings. Both typically go above and beyond their duties by routinely cleaning areas most people don’t ordinarily notice, including the tops of door frames, behind desks, and other out-of-the-way places. They have even been known to spray disinfectant in the areas under their charge to reduce the spread of germs during cold and flu season. The end result is a clean building that looks good and smells fresh. Rebecca and Heather are sincere, pleasant, friendly, and eager to help any time they can be of assistance. They are especially considerate of building occupants, asking permission before cleaning so as to not disturb anyone.

One nominator related how his group had experienced what it was like to be without this “outstanding team” after they were assigned to different buildings on campus. The outcry from his group was sufficient to bring Rebecca and Heather back to their building where their efforts continue to be sincerely appreciated.

Rebecca and Heather are very close. Away from work they love to spend time together with family and pursuing their ardent passion for shopping.
