VIMS

Administrative Support

The Outstanding Staff awards are chosen by nominations received by the Awards Committee from all faculty, staff, and students at VIMS. They are awarded in the categories of Facilities/Safety/Trades, Technical Support, and Administrative Support.

MacDonald PrimaryLibby has served in many roles at VIMS since she arrived in Dr. Rebecca Dickhut’s lab in the late 1980s. She continues to fulfill a diverse set of responsibilities in her current role as Assistant to the Dean and Director, which she began in 2012.

Among her many roles, Libby is VIMS’ Workers’ Compensation Coordinator, liaising between employees, supervisors, and the administrator of the compensation program. She ensures the paperwork is handled properly when someone is hurt, then follows up with the injured to make sure they are doing OK. She also plans and coordinates the Annual Administrative Forum, bringing colleagues together to share initiatives and inform participants of new developments.

As the administrative staffer for the Faculty Status and Tenure Review Committee, she manages the internal and external review packages and ensures they are submitted to both the Dean & Director and Provost within stated timelines. A Committee member notes this process “would be in shambles without her competent support and organization.

”Within the Dean & Director’s office, Libby is the "go-to" contact for personnel matters, keeps a watchful eye on budget items to ensure that spending does not run amok, and always goes the extra mile to get the job done. In addition to her institutional memory, Libby is valued for her positive, “can-do attitude”, problem-solving abilities, and care and concern for all parties. She is a superb administrative assistant, one who is always well-prepared, professional, and organized; and who distinguishes herself with her work ethic, intelligence, fairness, and cordial manner.
