Getting Started in Coastal & Marine Sciences Research as an Undergraduate

There are many ways to get involved in undergraduate research in Coastal & Marine Sciences.  Research opportunities may be paid, credit-bearing, or volunteer based and are available during the academic year and summer.   

This is a student-driven process.  The guide below is designed to help you prepare, explore opportunities, and confidently reach out to faculty whose work aligns with your interests.

Available research opportunities are often sent to students via email through our listserv. Email Dr. Christopher Hein to join. 

 

Email Faculty Directly 

Check out the VIMS faculty, Biology faculty, or the Geology faculty and explore their areas of research. If you find a faculty member whose research interests you, email them! Be sure to include information such as: 1) your year in school and program of study, 2) research interests and how they align with the faculty member, 3) relevant coursework completed, and 4) type of position you are looking for. 

Apply for Positions 

There are a number of local and national research opportunities that students can apply for. Check out sites like the *National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program for summer opportunities and the William & Mary Charles Center for various internship and grant opportunities.
