VIMS

Advisory Services

In addition to being part of William & Mary, VIMS is also a semi-independent state agency charged with fulfilling the role of science advisor to the Commonwealth on matters related to marine and coastal science. As part of this mission, ORAS’ advisory services team works closely with Virginia state agencies, local wetlands boards, marine and coastal-related private industries, and federal agencies. Additionally, ORAS responds to requests from the Virginia General Assembly, the Governor's Office, and the Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources to provide the best available science in support of management decisions.

An important part of ORAS advisory services includes advising regulatory agencies on coastal construction projects. To find out more about VIMS’ involvement in reviewing wetlands, dune and beach, and subaqueous projects, visit the pages below.
