Effects of toxic chemicals in water and sediment are measured at the molecular and population levels. Studies are conducted to evaluate

  1. uptake, distribution, biotransformation, and clearance of toxicants by marine organisms,
  2. effects of toxicant exposure on growth and reproduction, and
  3. molecular, cellular, and whole-organism responses as a basis for understanding mechanisms of disease.
