VIMS

Outstanding Professionals and Professional Faculty Advisory Award

The Outstanding PPF Advisory Service Award recognizes significant contributions and a record of outstanding performance towards fulfilling VIMS’ advisory mandate.

Karen Hudson, winner of the 2021 Outstanding PPF Advisory Service Award, with Dean & Director Dr. Derek Aday.

The 2021 award goes to Karen Hudson.

Karen epitomizes excellence in advisory service and is an invaluable member of the VIMS community. In her role as Shellfish Aquaculture Specialist, she serves as a point of contact for industry, communities, and agencies; connecting diverse stakeholders to address issues in shellfish aquaculture. Karen is recognized as a state and regional expert on these issues and her reach and influence has made her a leader in aquaculture extension within the national Sea Grant network.

While Karen is engaged in a broad range of activities, one event exemplifies her vision and effectiveness. The biennial Virginia Aquaculture Conference provides an opportunity for the industry to learn about current and upcoming issues, explore new developments in technology, and network with other growers, researchers, agency staff, and suppliers. Karen has organized this event since she started in the Marine Advisory Program and helped it grow to be the leading shellfish aquaculture conference on the East Coast.

Karen Hudson

In short, Karen represents the very best of what makes VIMS a special place. She understands that a powerful impact of science is in its application and societal role. She is seen as a trusted, neutral broker of information, which allows her to unite diverse groups and chart an effective path to solving applied problems in shellfish culture. These qualities coupled with a tireless work ethic capture the true essence of an effective ambassador of the advisory mission. It is for these reasons that Karen is more than deserving of this award.

Congratulations, Karen!
