Technical Support

The Outstanding Staff awards are chosen by nominations received by the Awards Committee from all faculty, staff, and students at VIMS. They are awarded in the categories of Facilities/Safety/Trades, Technical Support, and Administrative Support.

The winner of the 2018 Outstanding Employee Award for Technical Support is Mr. Hunter Walker.

Hunter Walker conducts fieldwork in the Chesapeake Bay.Hunter Walker is an integral part of the VIMS community, the Biological Sciences Department, and is especially important as a contributor to Iris Anderson’s lab. In the Anderson lab, Hunter is responsible for facilitating and running a variety of highly technical chemical analyses. Not only does Hunter rise above and beyond the needs of students and faculty, he does so generously and effectively. He is a hardworking, superb technician without whom many of us here at VIMS would be lost.

Katella/VIMS.Hunter has put much time and effort into helping students and faculty find solutions to technical problems and is instrumental in completing projects both in the lab and field. In recent years, he has spent many early mornings running boats up the York River estuary, building crazy chambers to measure various gases, and digging 6-foot-deep holes on the beach. Coworkers note that one of the best things about Hunter is that he is always willing to do it all again! This shows his commitment to colleagues and his positive attitude when it comes to hard work, which is well complimented by his dry humor.

Hunter, we are grateful for your service to the VIMS, and are proud to give you this award.
