Marine Science Mash-Up (MSCI 201)

Course Goals

This 1-credit, fall-semester course provides a true "taster" of the wide world of marine science. Students are introduced to the interdisciplinary nature of marine science through presentations by faculty, students, and staff at Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), William & Mary, and neighboring institutions. Topics cover a wide range of disciplines, including deep-sea biology, aquaculture, fisheries, physical oceanography, beach and shoreline management, and climate-change social justice, among others. It also highlights the various subjects that marine scientists research and the process of engaging in collaborative partnerships that span the natural sciences and connect to fields such as social sciences, government and law, economics, and communication. Students learn about how marine scientists study complex systems, the availability of opportunities for student research, opportunities in marine science at William & Mary and VIMS, and future paths to graduate school or a career in marine science.

Introduction to Marine Science (MSCI 330)

Course Goals

This 3-credit, spring course provides an overview of the world ocean's physical, chemical, geological, and biological processes. It emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of marine science and provides an integrated view of factors that control ocean history, circulation, chemistry, and biological productivity. The course also explores the interwoven mechanisms of global change and its implications for human society. As a bonus: this course is also a COLL 200!
