Virginia Science Festival

The Virginia Science Festival is a state-wide event that provides opportunity for engagement and exchange between children, teens, families, and scientists. Between September 26-October 30, 2015, hundreds of exhibitors will provide hands-on activities, live performances, interactive demonstrations, and family-oriented science entertainment.

A Scientist Walks into a Bar...

Tuesday, September 29th, 6:30-8 PM
Rivers of “red” and waves that glow—what’s that about? Find out in Dr. Kim Reece’s conversation starter: Some Like It Hot; Harmful Algal Blooms in Virginia. You’ll learn about “red tides” and flashy bioluminescent organisms that many have witnessed first-hand. This casual event is the perfect place to learn about the fascinating world around you, ask questions, and share your own thoughts and experiences. Held at Mike’s Place in Newport News.

Taskinas Creek Canoe Trip-Cancelled

Join Virginia Institute of Marine Science guides on a canoe trip exploring Taskinas Creek at York River State Park. We will explore the marshes surrounding Taskinas Creek, observe birds and invertebrates, discuss the importance of the marsh habitat, test water quality, and enjoy beautiful scenery. Canoe experience is not necessary for this moderately physical activity. Children must weigh at least 50 pounds. No program fee; park entrance fee required.

Teen Beach Night

We’ll visit VIMS’ Visitor Center in Gloucester Point (just north of the Coleman Bridge), then walk to a nearby beach to find out what’s lurking beneath the water. There is no charge for this program; registration is required due to limited space. Ages 13-17.

Beach Night gives adults a chance to be kids again. Participants will visit VIMS' Visitor Center in Gloucester Point (just north of the Coleman Bridge), then walk to a nearby beach to collect and observe bay animals. Bring a flashlight. There is no charge for this program; registration is required due to limited space. Age 17 +

Teeth, Tentacles, and Tails

Saturday October 24, 10 AM-11:30 AM
Participants will visit VIMS' Visitor Center in Gloucester Point (just north of the Coleman Bridge), then walk to a nearby beach to use seine and dip nets to collect and observe Bay animals. There is no charge for this program, but registration is required due to limited space. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
