Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, or other relevant field with substantive years of progressively responsible strategic leadership experience overseeing financial and administrative functions within a university setting. Knowledge of current and emerging issues, trends, and strategies in higher education finance, with familiarity of private/nonprofit finance and accounting is required. Candidates must have a deep understanding of financial and budgeting operations, and proven talent for the development and execution of long-term financial strategy. Proven experience relating to external constituencies such as governing boards, legislative bodies, public, and other funding agencies and donors is required. Demonstrated commitment to diversity in all of its forms, with the proven ability to interact effectively with diverse groups with sensitivity and tact is essential. Preference will be given to applicants who possess a master’s degree in finance, accounting, business or public administration or other relevant fields. An understanding of state and federal regulations governing higher-education institutions and knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia university or state policies and procedures is highly desirable. Strong working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and non-profit accounting to include a history of continuing education is preferred.

Responsibilities

The chief financial officer (CFO) is an executive-level position reporting directly to the VIMS agency head (dean/director-VIMS) and is a member of the executive leadership team. The CFO serves as the chief advisor to the dean/director regarding all financial matters of VIMS by providing leadership and rendering financial decisions through authority delegated by the dean/director. The CFO develops and communicates high-level strategy to ensure VIMS is financially stable and able to take advantage of new opportunities, and conducts routine evaluations of institutional programs to ensure optimal use of resources to meet the highest priorities of VIMS. Additionally, the CFO oversees and supervises the activities of the directors of Sponsored Programs, Budget (including VIMS Foundation operations), and Financial and Administrative Services. The CFO actively engages in W&M Board of Visitors meetings, VIMS Foundation board meetings, and the Center for Applied Marine Science and Technology board meetings.

About the Virginia Institute of Marine Science

Chartered in 1940, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS has a three-part mission to conduct interdisciplinary research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry, and the public. The School of Marine Science at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for William & Mary. VIMS currently employs 52 full-time faculty members and 300 staff, and has 87 graduate students in master’s and doctoral programs. There are four academic departments at VIMS: Aquatic Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Fisheries Science, and Physical Sciences.
