My research before VIMS focused on Great Lakes aquaculture. I cultured various freshwater finfish species in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), indoor and outdoor flow-through raceways, and aquaponic systems. My current research at VIMS centers on investigating the microhabitats of oyster grow-out bags and baskets. My project examines how various husbandry decisions at commercial oyster farms (degree of biofouling, ploidy, stocking density) affect the microclimate of off-bottom grow-out bags and baskets (DO, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll, salinity, temperature). I am interested in working with aquaculture producers to identify mechanisms that improve farm efficiency and develop more streamlined husbandry practices.
