Research

Modeling microbial processes in oceanic gyres.

The importance of marine ecosystem is more than providing food for us, it has profound relations to global climate change such as uptaking CO2, releasing green-house gas N2O and so on. I am currently focusing on the North Pacific and North Atlantic Ocean about the N2-fixation process, which probably supports about half of new primary production. Although upwelled nitrate can also support part of new production, dissolved inorganic carbon will also be transported along with it. However, N2-fixation is independent of dissolved carbon fluxes from the deep ocean and therefore can potentially drive a net uptake of CO2 and export of carbon. N2-fixation may be more important than vertical nitrate flux on global carbon cycle. My work is to construct models based on known theories, hypotheses and field observations, code them with computer languages, and let computers simulate ecosystems of tens, hundreds years or even longer. The goal of work is to reproduce observations, verify hypotheses and provide possible directions for field-works.

My research is supported by NOPP/PARADIGM project.
