VIMS Experiment Setup

Background

The VIMS experiment is a direct comparison of 3N C. virginica and 3N C. ariakensis in the arena of growth, condition, mortality, disease pathology, gametogenesis, and reversion. The timeframe of the experiment is from October, 2003 (setup date) until April, 2005. At each of the 8 participant sites, the VIMS animals are kept in the same, pre-approved containers being used by the grower, but separated from the economic survey animals.

Experiment Design

Animals Used:  The VIMS experiment animals used the average growers portion of the C. virginica population (minus the “streakers” and the slow growers). Only the 9-22-03 sieve group of the 3N C. ariakensis was used in the experiment which is defined as the “average growers” .

Setup:
  • 3 bags of 3N C. virginica with 320 animals / bag
  • 3 bags of 3N C. ariakensis with 320 animals / bag

Sampling Scheme

See this Excel spreadsheet of the sampling schedule.

Follow Along

Check the sampling schedule and look for updates to the data. Follow along as we compare triploid C. virginica and triploid C. ariakensis at each of the 8 sites. Each site has different variables such as salinity, exposure, and method of growout.
