Established by the Commonwealth in 1940 as the Virginia Fisheries Laboratory, the School of Marine Science, Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) of the College of William & Mary has grown over the years to become an internationally recognized research, education, and public service institution in the field of marine science. The Institute has dedicated itself to studying the estuarine and coastal natural environments while educating marine scientists to serve the nation in a variety of professional fields from basic research to natural resource management. Additionally, the Institute is the Marine Advisory Service for the Commonwealth providing information and technical assistance to coastal resource managers, researchers, marine related industries and businesses, and the general public.

The main campus at Gloucester Point on the York River and the Eastern Shore Laboratory at Wachapreague, Virginia are well situated to fulfill the Institute’s three-part mission of research, education and advisory services. VIMS work encompasses a diversity of disciplines including biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography, wetlands ecology, estuarine environmental engineering, fisheries science, and marine resource management.

Research -  For half a century, VIMS scientists have been working to provide a greater understanding of the complex processes and forces at work in the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries and Atlantic coastal waters. The high quality of scientific studies conducted by the Institute are the result of a long-term commitment to excellence in estuarine and coastal research. Today William & Mary is a leader in these fields.

Education -Graduate programs at VIMS are offered through the School of Marine Science of the College of William & Mary. The Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Science degree programs attract some of the nations’s top marine science students: additionally, a growing number of foreign students are seeking the benefits of advanced study at VIMS.Opportunities exist for undergraduate students to experience the intellectual stimulation and challenge of marine research through summer programs, as well as research programs conducted through local schools during the academic year.
