Trace Metal Biogeochemistry

The trace metal program at VIMS addresses diverse aspects of inorganic biogeochemistry in the marine environment. The periodic table at right shows some of the elements we study.

Current interests include

• Coastal groundwater discharge and metal cycling in the subterranean estuary
• The influence of phototrophic microbial biofilms on metal cycling in aquatic systems
• Trace metal budgets and mass balance in the coastal ocean
• Radium as a tracer of advective flow in sands
