In November 2017, I began as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the College of William & Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), where I am working with Prof. Elizabeth Shadwick to study marine chemistry and the carbonate system in seawater. My work focuses on understanding how the carbonate chemistry in the Chesapeake Bay has changed over recent decades, as well as preparing for an Arctic research expedition to the North Pole aboard the Swedish research vessel icebreaker (RVIB) Oden, which I will embark on in July 2018. In addition to conducting my scientific research, I am interested in exploring unique ways to communicate science to the general public. In that effort, I have led multiple web logs (blogs) from sea, have given talks at the K-12 and undergraduate levels, provide educational multimedia online (including YouTube videos), and maintain a presence on social media with Twitter (@arctic_andy), Snapchat and Instagram (@armargolin).
Prior to beginning at VIMS, I earned my doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) at the University of Miami. While at RSMAS, I was awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship for my work in the Hansell Labstudying carbon biogeochemistry in marginal seas. I received my bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU), earning the degree designation magna cum laude. In addition to my bachelor's degree, I received minors in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) and Geology, as well as the Graduate Certificate in Oceanography. I grew up in Iowa City, Iowa and served in AmeriCorps for two terms.
