August 2007

The VIMS Juvenile Fish Survey team made some noteworthy observations during this month’s sampling. Survey scientists counted large Summer Flounder, several approaching 24 inches, near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel small-boat channel. They also noted large flounder in the lower York River from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station to the Tue Marshes Light. Crew members measured keeper-size Weakfish (> 12 inches) during sampling from Milford Haven to Wolf Trap. While absent from samples elsewhere, the Upper Rappahannock River near Totuskey Creek and the Upper York River near West Point continued producing large Atlantic Croaker (14 inches and up). Survey scientists also recorded several unique and intriguing species including Bluespotted Cornetfish, Orange Filefish, Silver Seatrout, and Blue Runners.
