Data descriptors for the 100 lobster project.
General lobster dissection and data (Prof. Jeffrey Shields)
ri_id: | Identification numbers for the lobsters. ME represents lobsters from Maine, RI represents lobsters from Rhode Island. |
Location: | Lobsters from Rhode Island were all caught under the Newport Bridge in the East Passage. It is roughly 4 nm south of Prudence. |
Study: | (Intentionally blank) |
Date received: | Date received at VIMS. (ancillary data on necropsy date and individual performing the necropsy are available separately) |
CL: | Carapace length from the orbit to the rear of the carapace, in mm. (Conversion to inches by dividing by 25.4). |
Injury: | Number of injuries on an animal. These do not include the occasional artifactual injuries associated with shipment and handling such as recent autotomy of a limb. |
Dead: | 0 if dead at time of necropsy, 1 if alive at time of necropsy. |
Sex: | M = male, F = female |
Disease: | Presence of epizootic shell disease; 0 = no shell disease present, 1 = shell disease present. |
Intensity: | Disease intensity based on previous papers (0 = no disease, light = <10% of the carapace affected, moderate = 11-50% of the carapace affected, heavy = >50% of the carapace affected). |
Observed molt: | Molt stage determined by shell hardness and examination of a gill cleaner. |
Molt Status: | Molt stage determined via histology. |
TCBS: | Thiosulfate citrate bile sucrose agar is relatively specific for bacterial species of Vibrio. Data are presence of vibrio colonies grown from the hemolymph of a lobster (neg = negative, pos = colonies present). |
Metals assessments (Prof. Lawrence LeBlanc)
Status: | same as Disease descriptor above. |
Intensity: | same as intensity descriptor above. |
Molt_stage: | Observed molt as above. |
Sex: | Same as Sex above. |
Fraction (dry weight): | Dry weight of the tissue fraction used to assess elements in the hepatopancreas of lobsters. |

Histology (Dr. Roxana Smolowitz)
carapace formation stage : | histological assessment of the molt stage of the cuticle. |
# carapace pieces on the slide: | 1-5 pieces of cuticle mounted on a histological slide for evaluation. |
piece #: | Individual pieces were assigned a number for reference in the Lesion_characters data. |
lesion prev/piece: | prevalence of lesions on each piece. Single numbers indicate that the lesion prevalence was the same on each piece. Multiple numbers indicate the number of lesions present on respective pieces. |
Lesion severity: | severity of each lesion present on each piece. Single numbers indicate that the severity of the lesion was the same on each piece. Multiple numbers indicate the severity of lesions on respective pieces. See also Lesion_characters. |
RI Cell present/development?: | presence of reserve inclusion cells in the underlying epidermis and their relative size. These cells can sequester glycogen which is used in the production of chitin for the development of the cuticle. |
tegmental glands pesent/development: | presence of tegmental glands and their relative number. These glands are involved in molting. They secrete lubricants that allow the animal to molt properly. They also function in maintaining the cuticle in the intermolt animal. |
Presence of pillars in the lesion: | y = cuticular pillars present in the lesion, n = pillars not present. The pillars are a hallmark of epizootic shell disease. |
photos: | photographs of the histology were taken. NB: these photos have not been included in the 100 lobster data set at this time. |
Lesion_characters: | Descriptive notes characterizing the lesions in the cuticle. Piece or section numbers refer to the piece # above. |
