Research Interests

My interests focus upon understanding the ecology of microorganisms within estuarine and marine environments, with a concentration on those inhabiting &/or infecting bivalve shellfish.  Recently my research has focused on human pathogens, specifically vibrios and norovirus, known for transmission through consumption of bivalve shellfish.

Current Projects
  • Dynamics of total and pathogenic Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in oysters and overlying water in the lower Chesapeake Bay region.
  • Evaluation of high salinity relay as a potential post-harvest processing method for reduction of vibrio levels in oysters.
  • Analysis and comparison of molecular methods for the detection of norovirus in shellfish.
