Susan Stein, Publications Manager (ext. 7012)
Susan manages the day-to-day operations of the Publications Center. She is typically the first person to
talk to when planning a publications job. Susan has a BFA degree in computer graphics from Syracuse
University and has been at VIMS since 1992. Prior to coming to VIMS, she worked for 3 years as a layout
and advertising designer for a small South Florida newspaper. Always willing to take on new and challenging
jobs, Susan is here to help with all of your design and graphic needs.

Ruth Hershner, Graphic Designer (ext. 7010)
Ruth has more than 25 years of experience in graphic design yet still gets excited about designing
each new publication. She has helped lead the Publication Center's transition from the era of cut-and-paste
technology to today's world of digital publishing using state-of-the-art software and hardware.
See Ruth for any poster- or publication-design issues; she will be happy to oblige.

Harold Burrell, Graphic Artist (ext. 7062)
Harold has worked in the Publications Center for more than 16 years. During that time Harold has
hand drawn or computer-generated countless illustrations for reports, theses, and manuscripts. His
logo designs grace numerous VIMS web pages and t-shirts, and have helped advertise many seminars and conferences.
Harold's
digital photographs and video have aired on
numerous local news channels and have helped bring life to many scientific publications.

Sylvia Motley, Print Shop Manager (ext. 7064)
Sylvia has amassed 28 years experience in offset printing since arriving at VIMS in 1975. As
Print Shop manager, Sylvia operates the shop's professional-quality offset printer and high-volume copier,
as well as the paper cutter and binding equipment (strip, spiral, and saddle-stitched). She also orders and
stocks a wide selection of paper of various colors and weights. Sylvia takes pride in providing quality finished
work on a timely basis. |
David Malmquist, Communications Director (ext. 7011)
David directs VIMS' Communications Department, which includes the
Public Relations Office as well as
the Publications Center and Print Shop. The PR Office relies on publications and print shop staff to create
materials for VIMS’ promotional and educational activities. David has been at VIMS since 2001. He has a
Ph.D. in Earth Science from the Univ. of California and began his career in science journalism with a
AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellowship
at the Dallas Morning News. Before coming to VIMS, David was Science Communications Manager for
the Risk Prediction Initiative at the
Bermuda Biological Station for Research. |
