Major Advisor:
Dr. Steven A. Kuehl, Physical Sciences
Academic Interests:
- Examining the role of sediment transport, deposition and preservation from source to sink.
- Investigating the role of climate and land use change on sediment availability, transport and deposition from land into the marine environment.
- Understanding how physical and biological factors affect sediment burial and preservation.
Field and Research Experience:
- 2006, Research cruise aboard Army Corps of Engineers vessel, San Francisco Bay
Assisted in following/sampling/characterizing dredging plume from channel maintenance.
- 2006, Research cruise aboard R/V Marion DuFresne, New Zealand
Participated in an international collaboration, collecting over 20 giant piston cores along the coasts of the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Participated in subsampling, multi-sensor core logging and digital recording of core stratigraphy.
- 2005, Research cruise aboard R/V Kilo Moana, New Zealand
Participated in choosing over 200 vibra, kasten and box coring locations. Oversaw deployment and retrieval of kasten and box cores during night shift. Participated in subsampling, X-radiography and multi-sensor core logging of cores during cruise.
- 2004, Research cruise aboard R/V Kilo Moana, New Zealand
Assisted with kasten and box core deployment/retrieval. Helped subsample and X-radiograph cores.
- 2003, Project Consultant, Smith College Environmental Science and Policy Program, Coral Reef Ed-Ventures, Belize, CA. Assisted with underwater sea urchin and coral recruit data collection/entry to supplement AGRRA (Atlantic/Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment) database.
- 2003, Highest Honors Research Thesis in Geology: "Stress Bands in Belizean Patch Reef Corals: Their Use as Paleoclimate Indicators." Detailed geochemical and sclerochronological history of Belizean patch reef coral cores.
- 2001 and 2002, Summer Internship, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Beaufort, NC. Research on how seagrass-bed patch density affects velocities of water within the bed and created protocol for looking at the overhead geometry of seagrass beds in a flume.
- 2002, Summer Field Research Fellowship, Culpeper Fund of Smith College.
Research grant to spend three weeks in Belize, C.A., coring patch reef corals using SCUBA. Also participated in a survey of sea urchin species in Belize. Four subsequent weeks spent at Pennsylvania State University conducting geochemical analyses of the coral using a mass spectrometer.
- 2002, Field Course, San Salvador, Bahamas. Two week intensive field class focusing on carbonate sediment-producing modern environments including coral reefs, and studying lagoons, beaches dunes, lakes and Quaternary eolianite formations of San Salvador.
- 2001, Sedimentology Teaching Assistant, Smith College, MA. Teaching assistant to Dr. Bosiljka Glumac for 200 level geology course.
