Summary

Alex Miller evaluates the economics of nutrient assimilation via oyster aquaculture in Chesapeake Bay.

Full Description

Mr. Alex Miller, a staff economist at the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission, will present  "An Economic Evaluation of the Nutrient Assimilation Potential for Commercial Oyster Aquaculture in Chesapeake Bay," during the Tidewater Oyster Gardener's Association (TOGA) annual meeting at VIMS.  Miller's presentation is the culmination of joint research efforts with Dr. Kurt Stephenson of the Dept. of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech. Their research indicates that under reasonable conditions, oyster aquaculture can remove nutrients from Bay waters at a unit cost comparable to other point and non-point-source nutrient-removal technologies.
