An adaptive approach to enhance eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) in the Piankatank River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia
Piankatank River oyster settlement patterns
The intensity and timing of oyster settlement in the Piankatank River was examined from May through September 2006. Oyster shellstrings were used to monitor oyster settlement per established VIMS spatfall monitoring protocols. Results from the four Piankatank stations funded through this project are summarized below and these data are comprable to data from other spatfall monitoring stations in the Piankatank River maintained by the VIMS Molluscan Ecology program. The data presented below describe the average number of oyster spat per shell per week. "D" indicates the date that the shellstring station was deployed and the onset of monitoring activity during 2006. Station abbreviations given below correspond to stations S3, S4, S7 and S13 on the accompanying project map of the Piankatank River.
