Oyster Population Demographics at Restoration Sites

The demographics of oyster populations at restoration sites (shell plants and reefs) are quanitified annually. Shell plants (2 dimensional) are surveyed using a hydraulic patent tong that samples 1 square meter of substrate with each collection. Demographics of oysters on oyster reefs (3 dimensional) are evaluated with a diver survey using 0.25 square meter quadrats. Surveys are conducted in the Fall to ensure that the recruits for that year (spat) are included. On both shell plants and reefs, each oyster that is found within the sampling unit is measured to the nearest 1 mm. Oyster shell lengths are used to estimate oyster biomass (g tissue dry weight) on a per square meter basis.
