Who Are We?
The Mid-Atlantic Marine Education Association is an organization of people whose common goal is to improve education about all aspects of marine and aquatic environments. Our members include individuals whose work and interests encompass:
  • Classroom/formal education (primary, secondary and college-level)
  • Informal education at museums, aquariums, zoos, science centers and research facilities
  • Basic and applied scientific research on marine and aquatic topics
  • Business related to education, science and aquatic environments
  • Government agencies - local, state and federal - with responsibilities in education, environment and science issues

MAMEA members come from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, the District of Columbia, and beyond. We represent many institutions, organizations and programs. MAMEA is a regional chapter of the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA).

    Why Join Us?

  • Annual Fall Conference: Each fall, members meet to exchange ideas, learn about new teaching techniques and current research, establish new partnerships, and renew old friendships. The conference is hosted by a different member state each year.
  • State Mini-Conferences: Each state representative hosts at least one conference, field trip or special aquatic event each year.
  • MASTHEAD Newsletter: The three issues each year contain news and listings of upcoming marine education events in member states, plus information, curricula, and resource materials.
  • E-Mail Listserv: We are connected via a listserv that allows classroom and informal educators to exchange information, make announcements, post inquiries, and keep current on regional events.
  • Conference Scholarship Program: Each year, Paul Standish Scholarships support the attendance of six members at the Annual Fall Conference.
  • Grant Program: Two grants each year support members' marine education projects for classroom or other audiences.
  • Awards Program: Two awards honor outstanding marine educators in the Mid-Atlantic region. Awardees are eligible for nomination for the National Marine Educators Association Awards.
  • NMEA Membership Discount: Receive a discount on your annual National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) membership fees as an "Affiliate Member."
  • Mentorships: Other services available include mentorship by experienced MAMEA educators.

All this for just $10 annually (calendar year basis, January - December). Complete and submit the membership application with your $10 dues.
