Computers in Hargis Library are already set up to search SciFinder Scholar. Look for the SciFinder Scholar shortcut on the desktop.

SciFinder Scholar provides online access to several databases, including Chemical Abstracts Plus, Registry, CASREACT, CHEMLIST, CHEMCAT, and Medline. It provides:

 

Using this database from your office: first steps

If you wish to access the database from a networked computer on campus, you must initally download software from the links below.

It is strongly recommended that you print out the installation instructions before beginning the download.

Click on the links to download SciFinder Scholar, the site preference file, and documentation. You must download the software and the site file; the user guide is optional.

The most common reason that SciFinder Scholar does not work is FAILURE TO MOVE THE SITE FILE FROM THE TEMP FOLDER TO c:\SFSCHLR (see step 8).

You do not need to download the Site Preference File if you have done so previously.

Installation:

When installing Scifinder version 2006 you will be prompted to install the Internet Explorer toolbar.
If you choose to install the toolbar you will be able to launch SciFinder from Internet Explorer. You will have to choose to view the toolbar (View/Toolbars/Scifinder Scholar Bar). Clicking on the Scifinder logo on the toolbar will bring up help.

  1. Download SciFinder Scholar 2006 Software

  2. Change the default Save directory to C:\TEMP

  3. Click SAVE, and the file will be saved as C:\TEMP\SFS2006.EXE.

  4. Click on Scifinder Site Preference (above) and save it to c:\TEMP as well.

  5. Exit all Windows programs before beginning the installation.

  6. To begin the installation:
    • Go to the Windows Start menu, and click RUN.
    • Type c:\temp\sfs2006.exe in the box provided.
    • Click OK

  7. SciFinder Scholar 2006 Setup:
    • From this point, specific instructions will appear.
    • Accept the defaults.
    • Answer "no" to the question "Do you have a disk labeled "Custom Site Files?"

  8. After Scifinder has been installed, open the Windows Explorer and locate site.prf in c:\TEMP. Move it to c:\SFSCHLR.

  9. Once the software is installed, it connects directly to the server at CAS, the database producer..

Already have an older version of SciFinder installed?

If you have an older version of SciFinder Scholar installed on your machine, the installation procedure is the same as above, with the following exception. During installation, the program will ask you if you wish to continue. Answer yes; files from the prior version will be overwritten.

 

Please log out as soon as searches are completed to allow others access to the database.
