The Institute provides un-armed security coverage from 4:00 pm to 6:00 am weekdays and 24-hour coverage on weekends, holidays, and other non-routine closings. Buildings are normally locked between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm by the guard on duty during the weekdays. Buildings are unlocked by the housekeeping staff starting at 6:00 am on weekdays.

Contact Security

Security may be reached via cell phone at 9-694-7300. Assistance will be provided for such things as walking you to your car, unlocking/locking of buildings and rooms for special events, and investigation of incidents (theft, property damage, etc.). Requests for assistance from the Security Department may be made in advance by e-mail to [[security]].

Emergencies

In case of emergency, call 9-911 and the Gloucester County Sheriff's Department will respond. You may also use one of the "Blue Light" phones located around the campus for emergencies.

Report an Incident

All incidents must be reported to the VIMS Security Department. You may do this during normal business hours by (1) calling  the security supervisor, at 7067 or (2) after hours by calling security as mentioned above. The Security Officer will contact you to fill out the report and follow up. The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and the Campus Crime Statistics Act (formerly the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990) requires that crime statistics for the Gloucester Point campus (On-Campus), Wachapreague campus (Non-Campus) and the area immediately adjacent to the Gloucester Point Campus (Public Property) be provided to all faculty, staff, and students for the previous 3 calendar years. These statistics are listed below:

Crime Statistics

Crime statistics for the College of William & Mary campus include the VIMS Crime Statistics. In addition, the College booklet  "Stay Safe at the College of William & Mary" contains helpful information on living, traveling, bicycling, and partying safely. Also included in the booklet are helpful phone numbers for various campus support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Substance Abuse Education, and Sexual Assault Support.

Additional information on security coverage at VIMS is included in the VIMS' Operating Policy Instructions; section VIMS I-0605, Institute Security.
