|
The lectures in the Marine Science series are aimed at a scientific audience but are open
to the public. Each seminar begins with a reception at 3:00 pm in the Watermen's Hall lobby; the presentation
follows at 3:30 pm in McHugh Auditorium
(campus map, building 56) at VIMS.

Linking community structure and function through ecological genomics in polar and
hydrothermal vent ecosystems
(March 18, 2005) Dr. Alison Murray of the
Desert Research Institute will discuss her efforts to use
biotechnology and genomics to understand the biodiversity, biogeochemical activities, and
unique adaptations of microorganisms to their environments. A major goal of her research is
to develop environmental genomics technologies for studying gene expression in organisms sampled
directly from the environment, thereby circumventing the need for cultivation.

Dissolved organic matter: molecular-level chemical characterization to global-scale models of sources
(March 25, 2005)
Dr. Sybil Seitzinger,
a visiting Professor at the Rutgers University/NOAA Cooperative Marine Education & Research
Program (CMER) will provide a global overview of the sources and fate of dissolved organic
matter in the marine environment. |

(April 8, 2005) Dr. Rob Wheatcroft of the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric
Sciences at Oregon State University will explore the effects of flood sedimentation on the physical and biological characteristics
of the continental shelf and coastal ocean.
