May After Hours Lecture
National Security and the Threat of Climate Change
Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 7 pm
Lt. Gen. Lawrence Farrell
(USAF Ret.) will consider the threats that climate change poses to national security.
Farrell, currently President and CEO of the
National Defense Industrial Association,
will highlight a
recent report
that he co-authored as part of a blue-ribbon panel commissioned by the
Center for Naval Analyses.
The report contends that climate change has serious consequences for US military operations and facilities both
abroad and at home, including those in Hampton Roads.

Marine Science Day 2008
Saturday, May 17, 2008 (10 am-3 pm)
VIMS will host its sixth annual Marine Science Day on VIMS' main
campus
in Gloucester Point on Saturday May 17 from 10 am to 3 pm, rain or shine. Parking and admission are free. Visitors
will be able to examine high-tech science equipment, tour a laboratory, collect and observe aquatic animals in the
York River, and discover the importance of wetlands in VIMS' Teaching Marsh. Cooking demonstrations, mini-lectures,
and "hands-on"
activities will take place throughout the day. A Children's Center provides lots of fun, hands-on activities for
the younger set, and a "Scientist for a Second" booth allows visitors to picture themselves conducting research at sea.

Paper Parade of Marine Life
Saturday, May 17, 2008
VIMS will once again host its "Paper Parade" during Marine Science Day activities on May 17. Anyone of
any age can take part by crafting and wearing costumes of marine life. For information on how to participate,

June After Hours Lecture
Climate Change (aka Global Warming): Is it real or a hoax?
June 5, 2008; 7 pm
Join NASA scientist Bruce Wielicki as he leads off a series of lectures on climate change
by examining the science and politics of global warming.
Wielicki, a co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize
as a contributing author to the latest IPCC Climate Change Report, will describe climate change past and present,
as well as what researchers predict for the future. He will also discuss key uncertainties in climate change science,
why controversy persists, and where to go for solid information.

CBNERR Discovery Labs
Stories in the Sand
June 17, 2008; 6-8 pm
Learn how to see the world in a grain of sand before your next trip to the beach. You’ll examine sands by eye and under
the microscope to identify their origin, composition, and age. Kids will make sand jewelry and their own beach in
a bottle! Virginia Sea Grant educator Carol Hopper Brill will share her sand collection and knowledge of sands from
around the world in a short presentation. These free labs take place on the third Tuesday of each month in the Catlett-Burress
Research and Teaching lab on the VIMS campus in Gloucester Point.

Chesapeake Bay Watch is a continuing program designed to engage the public in issues regarding the living resources
and natural history of the Bay. Topics range from current issues to plant and animal species to seasonal changes in the
Bay and other topics of general interest.
