Facilities & Services
The ESL is located on 5 acres in the coastal fishing village of Wachapreague, VA. The main administration building houses offices for the resident staff and the hub for the computing network. A local area computer network supports a central database management system, GIS capabilities, image analysis, and high-speed Internet access.

Buildings
Our campus includes an administration building, a classroom & laboratory building, a seawater lab, a hatchery, and three dormitories.

Seawater System
A hallmark of the Eastern Shore Lab is a large, flexible seawater system for husbandry of live marine and estuarine organisms. The system includes a 5-meter seawater flume.

Field and Laboratory Equipment
We provide access to a variety of field and laboratory equipment for use by visiting scientists and students.

Vessels
The Eastern Shore Laboratory maintains a fleet of small vessels for the support of research and educational activities. The emphasis in this fleet is on small, shallow-draft vessels that provide access to shallow-water habitats along the seaside and bayside of the Eastern Shore.

Dormitories
Our two dormitories can accommodate up to 44 and include private, semi-private, and bunk rooms. Kitchen and dining facilities are available for use by guests. Full handicap access is provided in both dorms.

Animal Maintenance
A hallmark of the Eastern Shore Laboratory is its facilities for maintaining and experimenting with live marine and estuarine organisms. A flexible seawater system and a large number of seawater tanks, tables, and aquaria make it possible to support a variety of marine-culture and animal-maintenance needs.

Hazardous Materials Use
Faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and guests are expected to follow all established safety regulations and procedures, including those published in the Laboratory Safety Handbook and the Hazard Communication Standard Program.
