Research:

I study the factors controlling the distribution and abundance of marine life and how marine life influences and interacts with the ocean.

My research focuses on the ecology of marine zooplankton, using experimentation, field observation, and modeling to address questions such as:

1. What environmental factors control the abundance and species composition of micro- and mesozooplankton in shallow coastal bays? (Mission Bay, California)

2. Do the diets of mesozooplankton grazers include a substantial amount of the bloom forming phytoplankton Phaeocystis antarctica? (Ross Sea, Antarctica)

3. What are the implications of copepod carcasses in situ, both in terms of food web structure and zooplankton population dynamics?  (Chesapeake Bay, USA)
