The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) offers a number of educational and research opportunities for college undergraduates.
Rising college sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply for this summer-long internship program (late May- early August). Interns live in a William & Mary dormitory and conduct a project under the direction of a VIMS research scientist.
The VIMS Eastern Shore Laboratory (ESL) supports a wide variety of educational activities ranging from single-day fieldtrips to multi-week classes for students from a diversity of institutions. Instructors and students from VIMS, William & Mary, and numerous other colleges and universities in Virginia, other states, and other countries use the field station for classes. Field courses for undergraduate are offered during summer through the School of Marine Science at VIMS, with cross-listings in other departments.
Faculty in the School of Marine Science at VIMS partner with Arts & Sciences at the College of William and Mary to offer W&M undergraduates the opportunity to minor in marine science. The undergraduate minor in Marine Science provides interested students a coherent experience in this interdisciplinary subject. A total of 18 credit hours are required, which include 2 required core courses, 3 Marine Science Fundamentals courses, plus 6 additional elective hours. Courses are held at both the Williamsburg campus of W&M as well as SMS/VIMS Gloucester Point and field locations.
The Oyster Aquaculture Training program is designed to help meet the growing demand for trained staff for Virginia's oyster aquaculture industry, and to assist VIMS' Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Technology Center in its oyster-domestication programs.
Become more involved in VIMS activities by becoming a volunteer. Volunteer positions are regularly available in the Library, Visitor's Center, Gift Shop, and in laboratories. There are also opportunities to lead group tours and assist with public outreach events. Volunteers play a vital role in advancing the research and educational mission of the Institute.
