Education

VIMS plays an important role in marine-science education for a wide variety of audiences and age levels.

Graduate Program

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) offers graduate education in marine science through its School of Marine Science (SMS), which is a component of the College of William and Mary.

The purpose of the School is to provide quality education and scholarly research to students pursuing advanced degrees (M.S. and Ph.D.) in marine science. The objective of the program is to provide a fertile and stimulating learning environment in which students can pursue their studies. This is accomplished by providing a comprehensive program in the basic principles of marine science and marine resource management, and close interaction with faculty actively involved in research and management issues.

Internships

VIMS also offers numerous internships for aspiring scientists at the undergraduate and secondary levels.

Hargis Library

The William J. Hargis Library houses more than 88,000 volumes, 70,000 pages of scientific reports by VIMS and other agencies, and provides electronic access to marine literature worldwide.

Teaching and Learning

The Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program (MAP) at VIMS works closely with schools, businesses, government agencies, and individuals to provide information and guidance on a wide range of marine-related programs and activities. The Bridge, a web-based clearinghouse of the best on-line resources for marine science education, is developed and maintained by Sea Grant marine education specialists, and ChesSIE provides resources and information specifically for mid-Atlantic teachers.
