Field Trip Rules

printable (.pdf) page
Liability Waiver and Health Form: All participants are required to have properly filled out liability waiver and health forms.
Shoes: You must wear sturdy close-toed shoes properly laced during the entire field trip. No exceptions. We may experience slippery boat decks, thick mud and sharp objects (shells, wood, broken glass etc.). Sandals and flip flops will not be permitted. Sturdier Teva type sandals do not protect the top and sides of your feet from sharp objects and the Velcro often comes undone in thick mud.
Clothing: You must be dressed for the weather and ready for time outside, this includes dressing warm enough for cold weather and wearing sun screen and clothing that will protect you from sun burn in the summer.
Food and water: You must bring a water bottle, especially for summer trips where you should drink a liter or more of water each day. Also bring extra food and snacks to power you through the day.
-
You must wear your life jackets, zipped up and properly tightened, at all times during the field trip. You can only take them off when the leader says so. Life jackets are not punching bags.
No fighting, punching, pushing, shoving, throwing sand etc.
Please keep your eye out for any potential dangers and report this immediately to the trip leaders.
Additional Canoe Trip Rules
- Nobody but staff can climb/crawl on any part of the canoe trailer.
- Life jackets are not punching bags and the paddles are not to be used as weapons, swords etc.
- You must follow all instructions, from when and how to get in the canoes, to when, where and how to get off.
- No splashing with the paddles.
- Get in the canoe by staying low and centered with your hands free. Listen for instructions and cooperate with your partners.
- All canoes must stay between lead and sweep boat. We will move at the pace of the slowest canoe.
- Do not intentionally ram another canoe.
- Canoe Flip: Do not flip your canoe or other canoes on purpose. If a flip occurs, listen to orders from the field trip leaders.
Additional Boat Trip Rules
- Boarding the vessel: Board the boats when and wear the captain instructs you to, one at a time in single file. Hand your gear down to the boat and get on with your hands free.
- Keep all body parts inside the boat unless specifically asked to lean overboard, especially when near the dock. Please do not try to stop or guide the vessel when leaving or entering the dock. The boat is heavy and such action is very dangerous.
- Do not lean over the side of the boat and try to touch the water or splash your friend while on the boat.
- Both feet must be on the floor of the boat at all times.
- Please keep your eye out for any potential dangers (pilings, crab pots, floating logs, other vessels, your friends acting in a dangerous manner etc.) and report this immediately to the captain.
