Perennial Stream Identification Workshop: May 2 - 4, 2007
The Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and DCR Chesapeake Bay Local Assistance offered a Perennial Stream ID Workshop in early May. The Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act requires that counties map RPA areas according to perennial stream determinations. US Geological Survey topographic maps provide general information as to which streams are perennial and which are intermittent, but numbers of perennial streams in Virginia's coastal counties are often inaccurate. This course provided both lecture and field components to educate local government staff on perennial stream determination methodology and associated regulations. Dr. James Gregory (NC State University/Forestry) and Mr. Larry Eaton (NC Division of Water Quality) instructed participants on hydrology, physiography, aquatic invertebrates and field methods of identification; and Mrs. Joan Salvati (Director, DCR Chesapeake Bay Local Assistance) addressed regulatory issues.
