Summary

Join us as a speaker from the NOAA Monitor National Marine Sanctuary describes the sanctuary and explains how the Monitor site has become a living reef.

Full Description

The Monitor National Marine Sanctuary protects the wreck of the famed Civil War ironclad USS Monitor, best known for its battle with the confederate ironclad Virginia in Hampton Roads, Virginia in 1862.  This shipwreck, and many others in the area, also have redeeming ecological value.  Ships often become artificial reefs and provide habitat for marine organisms. During this lab, Shannon Ricles and Lauren Hessemann from the NOAA Monitor National Marine Sanctuary  will tell us more about the sanctuary and how the Monitor site has become a living reef. Activities will include ship building, archeology, and reef dynamics.

These family-friendly labs are provided by the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve at VIMS. There is no charge; however, registration is required due to limited space. Register here or call 804-684-7878 for additional information.
