Cutting-edge research and education programs require costly facilities, technology, and equipment, competitive salaries for faculty, and scholarships to attract the best students. As state funding declines--and as public and private grant awards become increasingly more competitive--VIMS must build a substantial base of private support to guarantee its place among the world's leading marine science centers.
