Loretta B. and Lewis Glucksman Professorship in Marine Science

Professor Hugh Ducklow is recognized internationally as an expert in marine microbial plankton, the smallest, most numerous and widely distributed autonomous organisms on the planet and key organisms in marine food webs. These organisms flourish near geothermal vents in the deep sea, in polar sea ice, and in all areas between these extremes. They are important agents of nutrient cycling and geochemical reactions. Ducklow's work has taken him from the York River through Chesapeake Bay to the open sea, inland seas in Asia, and Antarctic coastal seas. He currently chairs the Scientific Steering Committee of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study, a decade-long study of the ocean carbon cycle, and serves on the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP), a multinational study of global change. He currently has 6 graduate students conducting research on various aspects of marine microbial ecology.
