Getting Involved
The goal of the Bridge is to make current marine science information accessible to educators, and to help researchers get involved and make their data available and useful to educators nationwide. This section of the Bridge should help you, the researcher, in these efforts. How to Get Involved
There are many ways a researcher can become involved in education, from working directly with students to helping develop educational materials. To determine what outreach role suits you best, check out The National Academy of Sciences' webpage, RISE (Resources for Involving Scientists in Education). There is also a hard copy book from the National Research Council entitled The Role of Scientists in the Professional Development of Science Teachers (ISBN 0-309-04999-7) that may be of use to you.
If you decide your educational outreach role will include visiting classrooms, consult the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science's Sharing Science with Children: A Survival Guide for Scientists and Educators or the American Society of Plant Physiologist's Guidelines from a Scientist to a Scientist when Working with Teachers. These websites highlight the rewards of getting involved and give practical tips for before and during the visit.
Via the Bridge
Many granting agencies now ask proposers to include public education or a “broader impact” component in research proposals. (See the NSF Grant Proposal Guide). If your research contains elements that could be useful in K-12 classroom teaching, the Bridge could be your outreach link to a large, established national audience. Contact the Bridge staff to discuss possibilities. There are also several ways to get involved in marine science education on the Bridge. You can... Off the Bridge
Listed below are some projects you can join to become involved in educational outreach. Also, check with professional organizations for information on their outreach efforts. Many, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the American Physical Society, have education sections already active in educational outreach.
