Research Experience Top

I am currently a graduate student at the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, where I work in Dr. Kam Tang’s laboratory. My thesis project involves microbial dynamics on marine snow. There are three basic components to my research. First, using model particles, I am studying how bacteria in different physiological states colonize marine snow, and how bacterial motility may play a role in colonization. Secondly, I will be studying chemosensing behaviors of bacteria and how this may affect bacterial colonization on marine snow particles. Finally, I will also be looking at linkages between dissolved organic matter and particulate organic matter. Specifically, I will study how bacteria may utilize transparent exopolymer particles and possible effects on the degradation of marine snow. Ultimately, these heterotrophic microscale processes play a role in biogeochemical cycling in the ocean.

Before starting my studies at VIMS, I worked for the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory in Honolulu, HI. Our research involved observation mapping of invertebrate communities (deep-water corals and sponges) and the underlying geology of three newly-mapped seamounts in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Prior to that, I worked in the Antarctic for two seasons with Dr. Kendra Daly's group at the University of South Florida, studying krill physiology and overwintering strategies as a part of the SO-GLOBEC program.

Teaching Experience Top

In addition to working in the field, I worked on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, teaching environmental education. My earlier graduate education gave me opportunities to teach kindergarten through university level students all over Virginia. I am interested in technology integration and experiential learning in and outside of the classroom.
