Research interests

I am currently a marine scientist working on phytoplankton samples from the Ross Sea, Antarctica.  After completing the IVARS (Interannual Variability in the Ross Sea) project in 2005, I began working on the CORSACS (Controls on Ross Sea Algal Community Structure) project. Both projects aim to quantify the variability of phytoplankton species and biogeochemical processes that control phytoplankton assemblages on a year-to-year basis.  My duties include managing the Phytoplankton Ecology lab, administrative functions, ordering supplies, cruise logistics, and sample shipment.  Analytically, I process particulate carbon and nitrogen, chlorophyll a, biogenic silica, particulate organic phosphorus, and sediment trap samples, as well as count and identify phytoplankton species with epifluorescence microscopy.

Other active research interests include: polychaete taxonomy, systematics, reproductive biology and ecology; hydrothermal vent ecology, deep sea biology, and environmental impacts on benthic communities.
